Book notes: ‘Startup Growth Engines’ by Morgan Brown

Real Companies, Real Growth

Startup Growth Engines: Case Studies of How Today’s Most Successful Startups Unlock Extraordinary Growth‘ is a collection of case by Sean Ellis, Morgan Brown and the team at Growthhackers.com, exploring high-growth startups.

The relatively short book (166 pages for the Kindle edition) manages to pack in a lot of content as it explores the strategies and tactics that led to the growth of some of the tech world’s most well-known companies, including powerhouses such as Uber, Square, and Snapchat.

Priced at around $3 it’s a quick read and one that I would recommend to anyone with an interest in growth and user acquisition.

Key takeaways from the book

“The first, and most critical shared element is that they all have a highly valuable product that has become essential in their customer’s lives.”

“Beyond the shared must-have nature of their products, each of these companies has used a deep understanding of their customer and a rigorous analytical approach to growth that enables them to be hyper-efficient in acquiring, retaining, and monetizing their customers.”

word of mouth comes from content, thoughtfulness, solved problems, and ease of use—in short, the whole experience of a product or service.”
